What is the Purpose of Art Class? In art class, we are working hard to build up students as artists, to encourage them to build their creativity, consider different styles and types of art, learn to talk about art, look for art in their world, be an observer, look for beauty, understand how to communicate with images, and most of all just be engaged in the act of creating. Art is risky, art can be difficult to make; making art is courageous. Making art is a human act. I always tell my students, "You can be perfect, or you can make art." (inspired by Erik Wahl)I encourage students to work with their ideas where they are at, and their skills will develop as they go. In this process of building artists, we will see art that, (in our adult view) is "less than perfect". We just have to keep in mind that we are not just looking for perfect projects, because we are after something even bigger; developing artists who can think and see the world in new ways. The skills and techniques will come, but if we expect the skills and techniques to be there right away, the young artist can easily become discouraged.
